Edwin P. Rutan II is a retired attorney with a lifelong passion for American history. After a legal career, Ed transitioned into historical writing, focusing on the Civil War. His work combines rigorous scholarship with a storyteller's flair, engaging readers with compelling narratives and fresh perspectives on America's past. His latest book, High-Bounty Men in the Army of the Potomac: Reclaiming Their Honor, showcases his meticulous research and deep understanding of military history.
Ed's interest in the Civil War was sparked by his great-great-grandfather's service in the 179th New York Volunteer Infantry, which inspired his first book, If I Have Got to Go and Fight, I Am Willing. His legal career included serving as the City Attorney for Salt Lake City for ten years, where he was instrumental in developing the city's ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and preserving natural open spaces. He also practiced international law in Brussels, providing him with a diverse background that informs his detailed and insightful writing.
In addition to his historical pursuits, Ed and his wife, Lynne, advocate for improved mental health services in their community and enjoy skiing, hiking, and traveling in Park City, Utah.
Ed received a BA, cum laude from Columbia University and a JD, cum laude from Harvard Law School. He was also the Distinguished Graduate in his “Intelligence Analyst” class at the Army Intelligence School.
